CANZUK

2 June 2021

Over the past months, cross-party or caucus parliamentary groups have been
established in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom in favour of
increased multilateral cooperation in foreign affairs, national security and trade.
These members of the Commonwealth share a multicultural parliamentary tradition,
commitment to the rule of law and a history of working together in defence of
democracy. The respective countries of CANZUK, as they are collectively known at
the UN General Assembly, have evolved from a shared history as independent nations
in the most compatible way.

It is our belief that Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, acting
together, could augment their collective geopolitical standing on account of their
global geographic footprint. Furthermore, there is the highest likelihood of greater
prosperity which would come from closer trade links, facilitated migration and
reciprocal recognition of credentials and qualifications.

As parliamentarians, we owe a duty toward the people we represent to explore this
compelling proposition to the fullest. We therefore look forward to participating in a
comprehensive series of meetings between our respective groups to take things
forward.
